Facilitating Effectively and Kindly: A Workshop with Debbie McCubbin

This program is for those interested in facilitating discussions in a meditation setting. What we learn, however, can apply in many other areas of our life. We may be called on to facilitate informally, for example, at home or among friends. Or perhaps a more formal need comes up at work or in a community organization.

What We'll Cover

The Facilitating Effectively and Kindly workshop will feature talks, discussions with the whole group and in smaller breakout groups, and practice facilitation sessions. We'll explore questions like these:

How do we help people feel heard and hear others more clearly?

How do we handle challenging groups with people who are

  • Not talking
  • Talking too much
  • Getting heated
  • Being hurtful
  • Wandering off the topic

How do we, as facilitators, work with our own self-consciousness and fear of embarrassment?

The topics covered will include:

  • Listening - we know we could be better at it, what are the obstacles?
  • What makes an inspiring discussion?
  • What are the nuts and bolts of being a good facilitator?
  • How can challenging situations in a group discussion be managed more skillfully?
